A new roundtable convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will hold its first public meeting on Jan. 23 to discuss challenges associated with incorporating the risks and opportunities presented by climate change into macroeconomic analyses that inform U.S. federal budget processes.

The new roundtable — an interdisciplinary group of economic, climate, engineering, and energy experts — will bring together federal agencies, academia, industry, and nongovernmental organizations to begin developing the analytic and scholarly foundation needed to better inform policymaking and economic analysis. The roundtable will help address key issues, including how to translate and incorporate the complexities of climate change in macroeconomic models and analyses as the nation transitions to a net-zero carbon economy.

The activities and products from the roundtable will inform a new White House interagency working group of the Council of Economic Advisers and Office of Management and Budget.

“We are pleased that the Biden administration has identified this roundtable as critical to informing the president’s economic and climate endeavors,” said National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt.

The roundtable is co-chaired by Wendy Edelberg, director of the Hamilton Project and a senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, and Robert Kopp, professor of earth and planetary sciences and co-director of the Office of Climate Action at Rutgers University. The full roster of roundtable members can be viewed here

In this first meeting, the roundtable will explore the current macroeconomic, climatic, and public policy landscape.

Sponsors for the roundtable’s activities are the National Science Foundation, Wallace Global Fund, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and Bezos Earth Fund.
